How to Change Your American Airlines Flight: Step-by-Step Guide

Learn how to change your American Airlines flight in a few easy steps. Follow prompts on their website or call Reservations for assistance. Fees may apply.

To change your American Airlines flight, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your AAdvantage account or input your name and six-digit record locator on the American Airlines website[1].
  2. Find your upcoming trip and select the flight you’d like to change.
  3. Choose ‘Change trip’ in the top toolbar[2].
  4. Follow the prompts to select a new flight.

You can also make the change at the airport (self-service kiosk or ticket counter) or by calling Reservations at 800-433-7300 (English) or other language-specific phone numbers[3].

American Airlines allows same-day confirmed changes on select flights for a fee, with some exceptions. You can request a same-day flight change on aa.com, at the airport, or by calling Reservations[4]. The alternate flight must be for the same origin and destination, and your flight change can only be confirmed within 24 hours of departure of the desired flight[2].

Please note that charges or penalties may apply for changes, depending on the fare paid for the ticket[5]. If you’re unable to make your flights, contact Reservations prior to your flight’s departure to retain the value of your ticket[5].

For flights booked with points, there’s no charge to change an American Airlines award flight, though you’ll need to pay any additional miles that are due for your new flight[6].
